This page lists frequently asked questions. See Baleno tips page to see tips and tricks I have gathered through experience with my baleno.

Diagnostics

Do ELM327 scanners work?

No. ELM327 scanners (real or fake) will NOT work. Suzuki uses a proprietary protocol called Suzuki Serial Data Line.

I was successful in reverse-engineering it. I have been working on the side to build a hardware but due to minimal electronics background, I have been slow.

There have been efforts by other engineers. If a product comes available, I will link it here.

Car no start

Blinking check engine

Blinking Check engine means immobilizer error. Very bad to happen. Try cycling key a few times fully from OFF to ignition. If doesn’t fix. Mechanic visit mandatory.

I have intentionally not reverse-engineered immobilizer communication for security purposes. I can’t open source the code either as Baleno is lovely and I don’t want any incident of someone stealing a baleno through my code.

Not starting

Car cannot start without the following:

  • Fuel injectors. Check if wiring is correct and no fuel injector fault code
  • Spark. Check wiring and no coil code. I don’t think our baleno throws this code but verify manually that spark is present.
  • As mentioned previously, make sure check engine light isn’t blinking. If it blinks, immobilizer issue and car will not start no matter what. You can try desi jugaars of removing immobilizer, but better to just fix it at that point. Immobilizer is a good piece of deterrence
  • Crankshaft sensor. Located near oil pan close to driver front wheel. If this sensor is not working or has issues with ECU connection, car will not start no matter what. This sensor is essential to make the car run. You cannot bypass it.

Normal idle RPM

Fully warm engine without AC: 650-750 (700 target, 50 variation clearance).

The needle is not too accurate below 1000 RPM. But for a guess, it should be on the mark below 1000 RPM. From 0, the next mark is 500, then 750, then 1000.

So at warm engine with no load, it should sit slightly on or below the 750 line.
